The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) has provided the following banner ad guideline for the following reason, "to formulate and develop interactive advertising standards and guidelines. These standards and guidelines help play a vital role in creating efficiency in the interactive marketplace." (they make online shopping more visably appealing in other words)
It is a good idea to know where you plan to advertise prior to picking the size for your banner ad as many websites have different standards and requirements. The sizes shown below are sizes I have seen most commonly used.
